ABSTRACT PAINTING with Bela Fidel

In this four-week class students will learn the most important principles of painting: Design, Value, Color, Line and ancillary elements that give life to an abstract painting.

Painting in the abstract style requires a reliance on innermost vision, authenticity and feeling.Yes, this also applies to Representational painting but the latter offers an exterior image on which to base a vision. Painting Abstract makes artists delve into the recesses of their souls for a truthful and authentic depiction in shapes, values, color, mark-making, etc.

REALISM IN OILS with Patrice Al-Shatti

In this class students will learn an easy step by step method to achieve luminous realism in oils using a modern variation of the underpainting and glazing techniques used by historic masters. Students will hone their skills at preparing a painting surface, explore several ways to get their image on a panel or canvas, learn about underpaintings and how they make the painting process accessible for anyone, and experience the joy of glazing for depth and vibrancy of color. Glazing in oils is a magical process that brings extraordinary richness to contemporary realistic artwork and students will be amazed by their results. The class is divided into four sequential units where students will build an oil painting from hardboard panel up to a finished masterpiece. Beginning and more advanced oil painters are welcome.

Advanced Track: Students who have learned the basics of underpainting and glazing will explore the impact of burnt umber and pastel under paintings and work on imagery of their own choice. Students will work one on one with the instructor to improve their painting technique, hone their artistic voice, and generate amazing reference photos. Please come to the first session with several images you’d like to work with.
