Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer, The Milkmaid, ca. 1558, oil on canvas, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Johannes Vermeer’s 34 known paintings are really still lives with human beings.  He shows complete precision in the rendering of textures, colors, and forms without the picture looking labored, and with a softening of strong contrasts.  Using expensive pigments, he painted serene images of domestic life in Delft. Degas, van Gogh, Mondrian, Picasso, and Dali were all influenced by his work.
