Last week we kicked off our 2024 Summer Camps with a great start! Students expressed themselves through their artwork, learning about art theory and history along the way to help inspire their unique, creative voices. Twenty-five students learned new skills and techniques in sculpture, painting and, drawing, creating one-of-a-kind artwork to share with their families at the Friday Art Show.

Week 1 artists with their talented instructors, Mrs. Rad (Sculpture), Mr. Jason (Painting) and Mr. Brian (Drawing).

In painting, students created ‘alien landscapes’ inspired by surrealist painters like Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. Students used AI as a tool and painted from images created by images generated by their descriptions of an imagined world.

Students worked across all three content areas to create imaginary creatures inspired by the painter Hieronymus Bosch. In drawing they created their creatures by combining the parts of multiple different animals into one drawing. In painting, they added color to their imagined animal and created a setting or a background for their creation. In sculpture, they made their creature 3D by sculpting it out of clay.

Mr. Brian taught the kids how to use pattern to create texture and variety and the students created imagined landscapes using what they learned.

Students learned about the different techniques for building ceramics with Mrs. Rad, including learning about slabs, coils, and slipping and scoring their clay.

We wrapped up a great week of camp by signing each other’s commemorative aprons and welcoming families to enjoy all the great artwork created at the Friday Art Show!
