EXPERIMENTAL WATERMEDIA with Sue Hunter

In this one-day workshop students will enjoy experimenting with and learning about Japanese Yupo paper, masking fluid and hi-flow acrylics. Students will use masking fluid pens to block out lines and shapes on Yupo paper. After masking is dry, students will be apply hi-flow acrylics to paper using a small spray bottle allows acrylics move and blend across the paper. Once the acrylics are dry the masking will be removed and reveal the designs created. With critique and discussion students will consider their compositions and add paint or darker values with a brush, or remove and edit with alcohol.

Students will expand knowledge of materials and have fun creating experimental abstract artwork.

All supplies will be provided for an extra fee.

Mosaic Mirrors with Dave Hanson

Stained glass comes in a dazzling array of colors – arrange them side-by-side in a mosaic and pick the right grout color, and even a simple design will explode into bloom! In this class students will create a mosaic mirror while exploring the power of contrasting colors, and learn how a subtle variation in materials can add depth and amplify light. The class will start with a mirror centered on a 8″ x 11″ piece of plywood and a diamond-shaped mirror – a deceptively simple change that will make the artwork even more unique. In the area around the mirror, students will design an eye-popping mosaic of stained glass, colored mirror, millefiori, and dichroic glass. By the time the class is done, students will have a showstopper!

All supplies will be provided – tools, a board with a mirror attached, adhesives and wide variety of glass beads, colored mirror, iridescent and dichroic glass, for a $20 supply fee. However, mosaics are extremely versatile and inclusive, so students are encouraged to bring items to incorporate like an old earring, brooch, souvenir, toy, or memento. At the end of the class the instructor will give a grouting lesson and send students home with a bag full of grout that will make the project pop.
