LA-02-19 Hand Embroidery Basics with Linda Arandas

HAND EMBROIDERY BASICS with Linda Arandas

Students will stitch their way into the trending art of modern embroidery. Hand embroidery is a very relaxing and meditative form of self expression. Students will learn a few basic stitches and complete a desert botanical embroidered design.

No experience necessary!

Linda Arandas is a mixed media artist from Scottsdale. Her art is licensed by Art Licensing International and has been published in Stampington & Company magazines. Her studies in calligraphy and illustration influence her art as well as her love of nature.

LA-03-19 Introduction to Calligraphy with Linda Arandas

INTRODUCTION TO CALLIGRAPHY with Linda Arandas

Learn the basics of Italic Calligraphy. The introductory workshop will be focused on the lower case letters of the italic alphabet using broad edged calligraphy markers. No experience is necessary. Students are asked to bring the desire to improve their handwriting and take the first steps into the beautiful art of calligraphy.

This workshop is also suitable for students who may have already taken one or two calligraphy workshops. Practice makes perfect! Linda will provide students with projects that will expand their skills and help them to perfect their technique. Students of this level will work on capital letters and words.

Linda Arandas is a mixed media artist from Scottsdale. Before transplanting to Arizona she was a long time member of the Pittsburgh Calligraphy Guild. She has studied under many calligraphy masters.

BT-01-19 Hand-Painted Silk Scarves with Barbara Tibbets

HAND PAINTED SILK SCARVES with Barbara Tibbets

This workshop will teach students how to paint silk scarves with acrylic inks. Students will learn the difference between using dyes and inks, about pleasing color combinations, and also, techniques for painting the scarves. Once finished painting, they will learn how to heat-set their scarves, and how to clean and care for them. Students can expect to leave the workshop with two beautiful, hand-painted scarves.

PRCD-05-19 Marbling and Collage on Rice Paper with Pam Root and Candice Diaz

MARBLING AND COLLAGE ON RICE PAPER with Pam Root and Candice Diaz

This fun and enlightening workshop focuses on Experimental Chinese Marbling and Watercolor Painting Techniques. Collage pieces that have been made by painting rice paper will be incorporated. Students will have fun working loosely, while using their newly learned skills to create artwork without any preplanning!

Students will see a one-of-a kind piece of art evolve before their eyes when they dip rice paper in water and ink. They will also learn how to master rice paper marbling using just Sumi ink. After the marbleized pieces dry, students will begin to see images and abstract areas that can be painted on with watercolor and acrylic.

Finished marbled paper can also be easily used as bookmarks and note cards. Students are able to bring their own watercolor and acrylic supplies, but it is not required. Rice paper and ink will be provided

KH-01-19 Ceramics Zoomorphic Vessels with Kimberly Harris

CERAMICS "ZOOMORPHIC" VESSELS with Kimberly Harris

Create ceramic vessels or bottles that incorporate animal parts and pieces. Projects can be created as single-piece objects, or they can be multiple pieces that when combined assemble to create one animal. The vessels can have lids or bottle stoppers. The parts and pieces might be tails, wings, ears, snout, etc.

On the first day of the workshop, students will gain knowledge on how to use molds, tubes and other objects to create the parts. The workshop will also teach students how to score, slip and assemble the pieces to create their animal vessels. There will be exploration of tools to create scales, fur and other animalistic textures.

During the second day of the workshop students will work on finishing touches to their to their zoomorphic vessels. There will be demonstrations of different oxides, glazes and under-glazes to give the student a view of their different options for finishing the piece.

MK-12-19 Gnarly Pine - Asian Brush Painting with Martha Klare

GNARLY PINE - ASIAN BRUSH PAINTING with Martha Klare

Using traditional brush painting techniques, students will have the opportunity to create their own fun variations of “gnarly” pines to take home. The revered Pine is often a subject in traditional Asian Brush Paintings. Frequently it carries cultural symbolism and is usually depicted with an abundance of character and energy. Students attending the “Gnarly Pine” workshop can expect to learn about the lore surrounding this tree, and also explore some basic elements and techniques of this ancient, meditative, yet spontaneous art form. Each piece is a reflection of your unique ch’i (energy, spirit) and interpretation in that moment of time, which can never be repeated.

Note: You will be working with ink and pigments that do not wash out. Please dress accordingly.

About the instructor: Martha began brush painting over 25 years ago.   She has had the opportunity to study under several brush painters of distinction in various parts of the US as well as China.   Her work has been sold internationally by several publishers as posters, framed images, greeting cards, and other.

LT-05-19 Fused Glass Mosaics with Lauren Toth

FUSED GLASS MOSAICS with Lauren Toth

In this workshop, students will construct a fused glass mosaic plate using 1/4” squares of colored transparent glass on a base of clear glass. These translucent materials allow the beautiful desert light to shine through. The plate will be “grouted” with dark glass frit to give the piece a traditional mosaic look. The finished piece will be approximately 8” x 8” and be available for pickup later in the week.

LT-06-19 Fused Glass & Enamel Holiday Ornaments with Lauren Toth

FUSED GLASS AND ENAMEL HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS with Lauren Toth

In this festive workshop, students will make glass Holiday ornaments using fired-on permanent enamels. Students will receive instruction on how to mix and “dot” paint the enamel. They can expect to complete at least 3-4 ornaments. Each ornament is 3” x 3” on clear fused glass complete with a wire hanger. Snowflakes are an option but the patterns are virtually endless. Students will be delighted to learn to create fused glass gifts for the holidays. Ornaments will be available for pickup the week after the workshop.
