Fur and Feathers with Jane Kelsey-Mapel

In this workshop, students will get to explore animal forms and expressions in this ceramic sculpture class for all experience levels!

Students can create a portrait of their pet or a sculpture of a favorite animal in this fun two day workshop. Basic animal anatomy and gesture will be introduced so students can discover style, whether it's realistic, abstract or whimsical.  Students will learn the basic form and structure of the animal of their choice and how to build it in clay to create a small sculpture or a cup. Students will use hand building and modeling techniques to create form, texture and detail.

During the first class, students will sculpt the pieces.  During the second class, students will have an opportunity to apply translucent underglazes and glaze.  Fired pieces may be picked up after the workshop.

Jane Kelsey-Mapel is an Arizona artist known for her narrative ceramic figure sculptures. She holds a bachelor's degree in Art from Arizona State University and a master's degree in Ceramics from the University of North Texas. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections and has been featured in U.S. and international publications.

JKM-24-21 Day of the Dead Skulls with Jane Kelsey-Mapel

Day of the Dead Skulls with Jane Kelsey-Mapel

Dia De Los Muertos (in English, Day of the Dead) is a joyous Mexican holiday when families come together to remember and celebrate their deceased loved ones.  Following in this tradition, participants will create colorful ceramic skulls inspired by the sugar skulls made for Day of the Dead celebrations.  The first day of the workshop will be spent working in wet clay.  Jane will discuss the basic structure of the head and will demonstrate hand building and decorating techniques.  The skulls will be bisque fired and students will return for a half day class to apply the final surface color.  The pieces will be fired and ready for pick up before the Day of the Dead celebration.
