ART HISTORY LECTURES- Auguste Rodin Part Two
Description:
The Burghers of Calais, 1884-1895, bronze, Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, Calais
By 1895 Rodin was at the height of his fame, but the acclaim which greeted him was accompanied by intense vilification because the critics and the public still wanted finished, idealized, heroic statuary. His sculptures in this era, 1884-1917, include The Burghers of Calais, Thought, The Balzac Monument, The Hand of God and Cathedral. In this lecture we will also pause to consider his erotic watercolors.
Rodin now had gained many honors and awards and female friends. In 1917, his last year, he married Rose Beuret, his long-time companion and the mother of his son, to show his gratitude to her for her fidelity to him, despite his many love affairs.
