CERAMIC SURFACE DESIGN with Dani Sirrine

Moving beyond a blank canvas can be a scary step to take when working in ceramics. This workshop will help students gain the confidence needed to take the leap and add personality, style, and artistic voice to their work. Students will create their own custom images and learn to apply them to work as slip decal transfers. Etch patterns and depth with water etching techniques and produce volume and movement with modeled slip texture. Adding these skills will enable students to create more dynamic pieces, and could be the spark leading to developing a recognizable body of work. This class is for both wheel-thrown pottery and hand-built ceramic pieces. Intermediate-level experience is recommended but even beginners will be capable of executing several techniques from this course.

Students are encouraged to bring their own works on which to apply these techniques, however please ensure they are quite wet still-up to a wet leather hard. It is much easier to quick dry works with a fan if they are too wet, but if they are too dry for slip absorption processes then many of these techniques won’t work! Please also prepare ahead of time some ideas of imagery you would like to attempt for slip decals so you come prepared and ready to start.
