DH-01 GLASS MOSAIC MIRROR with Dave Hanson

GLASS MOSAIC MIRROR with Dave Hanson

Opaque stained glass comes in colors that are dazzling and nuanced, and they become even more intense in a mosaic, when they’re pushed into a dynamic relationship with other hues.   In a mosaic, simple designs come to life in a way they couldn’t in most other media.  In this 1-1/3 day class you’ll create a mosaic mirror that will ignite your décor and hopefully a passion for this timeless and astonishingly versatile art form.   We’ll use basic tools, primarily tile nippers, to give the pieces a handmade feel.  Though mosaics are usually associated with southern Europe and the Mid-East, I love them because they embody the Japanese principle of Wabi-Sabi, the perfect harmony created by imperfect parts.  I’ll supply a jigsawed board (the same shape as the parabolic octagon in the picture) with mirror attached and I’ll also furnish glass, plus beads, colored mirror, iridescent and dichroic glass so you can explore how subtle variations in material can add depth and even turn a piece from visual to tactile.  Day 2 is all about picking the right color grout to make your project pop, then grouting it, and bringing home your gem. (if your schedule doesn’t allow you to return for day 2, I’ll coach you on how to do it at home.)

A $15 materials fee paid directly to the instructor covers all class materials for the workshop.
