The Narrative Figure in Clay and Mixed Media with Jane Kelsey-Mapel
In this class, students will have the opportunity to create a compelling narrative by sculpting a clay figure and incorporating mixed media and found objects. The figure’s gesture, facial expression and relationship to the other objects will come together to reveal a “story”. The construction of the figure may be inspired by doll making techniques such as movable joints and/or cloth bodies combined with clay heads, hands and feet.
Jane will discuss how she and other clay artists have used mixed media and found objects to create metaphor and symbolism in their work. She will demonstrate hand building, modeling and mold making techniques to sculpt a figure. Various options for surface finishes and decal transfers will also be discussed. So start collecting interesting and unusual objects and join us for an exciting exploration of ideas and materials!
