ART HISTORY LECTURES- Auguste Rodin Part One
Description:
Auguste Rodin, Part One, 1857-1883
The Thinker, 1879-89, bronze, Musée Rodin, Paris
Auguste Rodin is considered the founder of modern sculpture, a style which reflects the natural, life-like and individual over the heroic and mythological.Rodin asserted the artist’s right to declare his work finished (even though it looked unfinished) when he had realized his artistic aim. As such, he cleared the path for The Impressionists
We will look at his early sculptures from 1857-1883, including The Gates of Hell (birthplace of The Thinker and The Kiss), The Age of Bronze, The Man with the Broken Nose, and The Monument to Victor Hugo. And we will meet his patents and his two favorite ladies: Rose Beuret and Camille Claudel.
