JKM-18-20 Figurative Vessels in Clay with Jane Kelsey-Mapel

In this class, inspiration for work will come from a long history of figurative vessels all the way from ancient ritual objects to contemporary whimsical containers. Hand building and modeling techniques will be used to create human or animal formed vessels such as teapots, pitchers, cups and vases. These may be functional objects or purely sculptural. Surface decoration techniques will include the use of underglazes on wet and bisque fired clay to create pattern and color along with cone five glazes.

The ultimate goal of this class is to have fun while learning about clay, the figure and develop a personal style. Note: live models will not be used, students may work from photographs and/or their imagination.

Jane Kelsey-Mapel is an Arizona artist known for her narrative ceramic figure sculptures.
