SILK PAINTING: THE SERTI TECHNIQUE with Cheri Reckers
In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to learn the art of silk painting using the serti technique (serti: meaning to "outline or enclose") and as a result, be able to create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, silk gift - perfect for Mother's Day!
During the workshop, students can create their choice of a silk scarf, wall hanging or a table runner on silk habotai using fluid textile paint and water-based resist. Creative options that day will include experimenting with watercolor techniques or add texture with salt. Students can create their own simple design or use one provided by the instructor. After the workshop, students can expect to take their finished silk painting home with them (that can be washed after heat setting with an iron), the perfect gift for Mother's Day!
No experience necessary! Just come in and have fun! All materials are provided!
Note: the paint will stain your clothing, please dress appropriately.
Cheri Reckers earned her BFA with honors from the Columbus College of Art & Design and has been a professional silk painter for almost 30 years. SO-08-21 Zentangle Fantasy Desert Cacti with Suzanne O'Malley
ZENTANGLE FANTASY DESERT CACTI with Suzanne O'Malley
The meditative art of Zentangle will be explored in this workshop, as students focus on creating fantasy desert cacti designs containing Zentangles.
Zentangles are miniature pieces of unplanned, abstract, black and white art, created through a very specific method, to form structured patterns on a square paper tile. Students will see the patterns unfold before their very eyes as they become completely engrossed in this “artistic meditation.” They will learn, through guided practice, how to develop different “tangles” that can be expanded upon exponentially. Students can expect to escape the world for a while, as they create patterns and designs that they never thought possible!

JGP-38-21 VIRTUAL CLASS - WATER COLOR UNLEASHED: PAINTING FROM PHOTOS with Julie Gilbert Pollard
VIRTUAL CLASS - WATER COLOR UNLEASHED: PAINTING FROM PHOTOS with Julie Gilbert Pollard
In this class, students will combine the "reality" of the landscape with memory and imagination. By concentrating on shape and value as the most important of the building blocks of painting, students will use “color-as-value” to stimulate an emotional response from their viewer. Students will learn to use unexpected color combinations in unpredictable ways to convey how they see AND feel about the world we live in. Technique will be studied also, as a necessary component to the "big picture" of landscape painting.
A photo will be provided for the student’s use for the first class study. Students will bring their own reference materials for the remainder of the class. Demonstrations of techniques will be given suitable for the subject matter, exercises, critique and lots of painting time. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting!
